My name is Nancy Miller. I am a graduate of Coach University, have a masters degree, a background in psychology and a successful Life Coaching practice. But, more importantly I've been where are you are now. What's that saying - "Don't judge a man until you've walked a mile in his shoes"? I've suffered from recurring depression all my adult life, each episode increasing in length and severity.

But now my struggle with depression is FINALLY over. I've broken the cycle and am living a wonderful life despite being vulnerable to depression.

I can't say "I will never be depressed again" (although as each year passes this seems less and less likely).

But I can say that even if the depression returns it won't rob me of my vitality!

Because I've created a personal strategy that uses my tendency to depression to improve rather than detract from my quality of life. I use my low moods to teach me how to take better care of myself or to alert me to things I need to handle differently or change.

Remember what I said at the beginning of this letter? - That looking for a "magic" remedy might be one of the things that's preventing you recovering, well that's because . . .

Simply getting rid of your low mood often isn't enough in the long-term because your depression is generally a symptom of what's wrong in your life. Not the cause. If you only treat the symptom the reasons why you got depressed in the first place remain. So, eventually you'll get depressed again. Until you make some changes, in your attitudes and behaviours that is.

However, once you're depressed it's very difficult to make positive changes because you don't have the energy or motivation. And that's why medical intervention can be so effective. Antidepressants appear to change the chemical balance in your brain which gives you the energy to alter your life. For some people psychotherapy appears to have the same effect. Whatever works for you, you need your energy restored to take different actions.
